I'm down...I'm not thrilled about the no tracking rule, though...esp since the sp-404 can program pattern changes in sequence...how about tracking, but using only a single stereo track to chain patterns? :D

I been slackin hardcore recently (on the music makin side)  and my 224 hasn't been gettin much love. I really wanna rep the ST fam for this battle, but I don't wanna make any promises till my site launches. I guess the more people who get down the more I wanna add my contribution..... I suppose this my weak attempt at peer pressuring ya'll!

Nice idea on the battle Juxt ..... which side are you gonna take?

I'm working on mine, now. Its a little bit trickier when your hands are tied to one break (especially if you're trying to make a dynamic and interesting track!) At any rate, this should be interesting to see how it all turns out. other than myself and MM, anyone else thinking of taking this one on?

I was thinking of jumping in this one. Have to see how my sampletraks fare. They've been on their last legs. Time to purchase another grin.  Seems this battles choices are interesting.

Here's mine.
Not totally happy with the mixing. To me it's kind of conjested.
Part of the challenge is getting a decent mix inside the sampletrak, and relying on it's internal effects.
I did end up eq/compressing the stereo mix.
I ended up using the playlist, and 2 tracked it realtime.

This one has been a tricky one for me. I'm going to see if i can make the deadline, but I have an awful lot on my plate this week. I've tried to flip it twice and so far my ideas have been ok, but still i dont feel like its taking up enough of the sonic spectrum (vox samples, conga, subbass, drumbreak). I'm trying to stay original with this so i'm trying to stay away from the loops and stuff that are more obvious. I think I'll go back to the drawing board this evening.

Mattman, very nice take on the sample...you've managed to carve some really good stuff out of there!

personally, this is the type of track I'd usually pair up with another track's sample. Maybe sometime for the weekly sample, we could have two tracks that we can work with. smile

Here's mine- I didn't have too much time to put in on this one, so please dont mind if it seems less polished than my other stuff. I think i'll go back sometime in the future and change up the drums...the way i took on the sample definitely deserves something with more low end and punch. Later thsi week after I get some time, i think i'll sweeten with some strings and a different break or sometime. at any rate, feedback is always appreciated

OK, here's my attempt. I had a lot of versions but I went with this one because it had more going on. Cajun Moon is full of stuff but damned if I could find any of it but I did enjoy the challenge. Maybe I should have kept it simple. Oh well. Personally I'm feeling everybody else's beats. I love Z32's "out there" track and Mattman's smooth take on it (feelin' the chill jazz of it all) but I think Lodger has come up with a winner (too funky for words).

Enjoy the bezerkerness.

thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm not sure if you've ever noticed, but some types of drum breaks just seem more compatible with different types of flips. For mine, i thought that the idea was good, but the full sonic spectrum hadn't been filled out.

I'll be able to provide feedback to you all after i get off of work today, so keep in mind that yours wont go un-returned.

An idea that i also had for another battle would be to take two tracks and make people put them together. to me, hip hop is all about discovering the synergy between records...the magic that happens when you combine two things that arent naturally together.
